Ways to improve your health during National Wellness Month

working As adults continue teleworking and we prepare for many metro Atlanta school districts to start school virtually later this month due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic, we thought we’d offer some advice on how to stay well now more than ever, especially since August is National Wellness Month.
With the help of this article by Johns Hopkins, here are a few tips to stay well during these unprecedented times:
Develop a morning routine. Especially for those parents working from home and facilitating digital learning, getting up before the kids and creating a morning routine is crucial.
“First thing in the morning, I recommend spending 10 to 15 minutes on self-care,” Harpreet Gujral, program director of integrative medicine at Johns Hopkins’ Sibley Memorial Hospital, says. “I take a moment to think about three things I’m grateful for. They can be simple things, such as a comfy blanket, a safe home, warmth, spring trees, blue sky or blossoming trees.”
Get moving. Whether indoors or out, it’s important to get your body moving. An active lifestyle helps maintain energy and builds your immunity, which we can all benefit from. Fresh air and sunshine also prevents a deficiency in Vitamin D, which can leave you more vulnerable to illness like the common cold.
Maintain a healthy diet. In a time period where uncertainty and fear can lead to poor eating decisions, now is the time to keep our diet in line. It’s important to fuel our bodies with immune boosting nutrients found in fruits and vegetables and consume less inflammatory foods like sugar and fats. Also, drink a lot of water and limit your alcohol and caffeine intake.
Focus. There are a lot of distractions in life, but when we’re at home with kids and pets or in an environment that we aren’t used to working in, our productivity can really suffer. Find a place to do your work in peace, ideally at a desk. Try time blocking your schedule and make an effort to complete important tasks in the morning when productivity is usually higher.
